What are the best name generators?
In this article, I rank over 31 different types of best name generators in 4 categories: domain name, business name, username, and random name.
All types serve various purposes and it is beneficial to first define what they do and what features we should be looking for the best name generators.
Why do you need a domain or brand name generator?
The main reason to use a name generator when you are starting a business is to check if a domain of your choice is available for purchase and if social media account names are available for creation.
I am sure you have some great business name ideas that you want to implement in your small business.
Domain Name Generators
A good domain name generator should generate a name from the given keywords and have the ability to add various characters or word manipulations before creation.
After possible options are displayed, they should be immediately validated if the domain is available for purchase. In addition, as we live in a social media boost, the name should be verified against various social media accounts.
Who is it for Anyone who is looking for a specific name related to their requirements?
Business Name Generators
Business name generators, similarly to domain generators, should have a flexible way of mixing different keywords as well as having options to manipulate the string. As a result, users should be given many different options and be able to purchase a logo or other designs as well as a domain name.
Who is it for? Someone who does not want to waste time to create branding or look for the complex domain search.
In general, a username generator is a simple tool where you can go and create a simple, funny, or creative username. A good generator should also give you an option to create an alphanumeric, difficult to remember name if you want to use it for secure applications.
Who is it for? Gamers, web/application developers, and any IT related roles
Random Name Generators
Let’s first explain what a Random Name Generation is. It is a tool for randomizing two or more words to create new words with different meanings. A good random word generator should have many different categories and subcategories to choose from and a big database of keywords to select from.
Also, it should allow users to specify their own, additional keywords. Then, all words should be randomized. Some tools provided here have only an option to randomly select a keyword by category from its database which is not really a random name generation rather it is a random word picker.
Who is it for? Anyone who is looking for some inspiration or simply to have fun picking a random item
Social Media Check
There is also one very useful feature that any domain or business name generator should have, an option to scan most social media networks and display it to the user if a particular name is taken. This helps users avoid any surprises that may come later when setting up social accounts for their business.
Best Domain Name Generators
What to look for?
Usability: This is basically how easy it is to navigate the site and get your name generated. I have not included any sites that have annoying subscriptions or redirecting pop-ups.
I also looked at how well designed is the layout and if label descriptions are clearly displayed. On some sites, I found immediate redirections to hosting providers instead of domain registrars.
Features: I think there are two important things when you want to generate a domain name:
- Available keyword manipulation, e.g. extensions, language, adding characters (front, middle, end) to your keyword and any other funny or crazy options you might like using
- There should be many default registrars provided with a short description and price. Some sites have one or two default domain registrars only
Score: Average between Usability and Features
In summary, as a potential domain buyer, anybody should be able to have many options available to generate their domain name and many domain registrars to choose from as this is the main purpose of any domain name generator.
DomanTyper is definitely among the best name generators. In DomainTyper you simply type your keyword. The tool does not allow you to type spaces.
The moment you start typing the interface refreshes with possible domain names. The good thing about this tool is that it displays all domain name possibilities on the screen instantly. It also shows different domain extensions to select from.
Another superb useful feature is that it checks for a number of social media usernames that match your domain name. This is useful when you think of setting up a business brand.
In terms of word manipulation, there are no additional options to mix your domain keyword with some prefix or suffix. You can only load more results and check if you like it or not.
Pros: simple, one-page interface, all options displayed clearly check for social media username
Cons: no additional options for keyword manipulation
Instant Domain Search generates all possible names the moment you start typing your keywords which is super convenient.
The results are grouped in three categories:
- Extensions: it concatenates your keywords and displayed all possible domain names with different extensions
- Generator: it adds suffixes and prefixes to the concatenated name and displays all possibilities for only com extension
- For Sale: it is a big list with all domain names related to your keywords that are available for sale
All three options have a “See All” button to view all possible options in the given category.
On top of everything the site has additional options that are worth mentioning:
- Pronounce – to find out how your domain name sound when spoken
- View Site – this is my favourite option where you can click the button and see the website of the taken domain name
- Copy Url
- Export CSV
Also, you can click on the expired domain tab to view any domain name that has expired and is available for purchase.
Pros: instant results with availability,
Cons: no user own prefixes or suffixes to the given keyword, no social media check
Domains Bot site looks very impressive at the first glance. It has a well-designed interface with a lot of information on the screen. They also offer some analytics services to help grow your business.
To get your domain generation started you have to scroll down to the bottom to see the below screen where you can type your keywords.
Once you press enter you get a new page with additional options available. On the left, you can manipulate your selection with things like extensions, language selection from 11 available, dashes, adult content flag, additional synonyms for your keyword, and filter specification.
When you are ready to purchase you can press the buy button and select your domain registrar from 11 available. In general, the site is done very well and it does the job.
Pros: well-designed interface with other services available, good selection of domain registrars available, additional keyword manipulation
Cons: no major domain registrar is available
Domain Name Soup is a free domain name generator tool to find your best domain name, check what names are taken, store your favourite domain name selections and monitor them and receive alerts when they need renewing.
The tool offers an outstanding set of options to find the best domain name.
There are two main search approaches you can take:
If you have a domain keyword you want to search against for different options, you can:
- Combinations of hyphens to create a hyphenated domain name
- Prefix or suffix with your domain keyword
- Individual letters with your keyword
- Use multiple choices for any of the keywords
- Use Thesaurus to find synonyms
- Mixing your keywords to find different keyword combinations
- Try advanced domain name search
If you do not have a keyword but want to find a perfect domain name, you can:
- Search through all possible domain names
- Search for any 3,4,5,6 letter domain combinations
- Look through available dictionary words for something related to your business
Below is a sample from all possible options, but there is still more.
Pros: a huge number of options to explore, easy interface to navigate
Cons: it does not show other domain registrars
Wordoid is one of my favourite best name generators. It is a domain suggestion tool as well as a domain name generator. It suggests made-up words that look unique and sound natural. If you look for a cool business name this site could be the place to go.
The generated words are supported by multiple options:
- Languages – this is the feature that many domain name generator tools lack; simply select a language and your domain name will be generated in that language
- Quality (High/Medium/Low) – it assesses the word how it looks, sounds and feels
- Pattern – this is where you can provide optional keywords and select if your name should be in the beginning, end or middle of the new domain name
- Length – set between five and fifteen – the number of characters for your domain name
- Registrar – select your favourite registrar (Bluehost, GoDaddy, NameCheap)
Also, there is an option to sign up and pin your favourite domain names so you can monitor them later.
Pros: simple, one-page interface, all options displayed clearly
Cons: Could be more word manipulation options
NameStation is a domain name generator with an extensive number of options to select from. On the main page, you can select from many different keyword manipulation algorithms that include: append keywords, compound words, business names, conceptual names, related words, hand-picked names, tweak words, and many more.
The only limitation I found was you need to register to be able to create a project and do the searches. Also, with the free account, you have a limited number of searches you can perform.
The last thing is that only main keywords generated names are being checked for availability. If you want to have an instant availability check you have to sign up for a premium plan.
In summary, this tool is very comprehensive and gives the users so many possibilities for a new domain name.
Pros: numerous options to manipulate with a name
Cons: limited searches in a free plan, instant domain availability only for a premium account
Name Mesh offers a good variety of different options when searching for a good domain name. When you type a keyword on the main screen it automatically redirects you to BlueHost to register a domain which is in my opinion a big push.
The main window is still open offering a big set of options for users to mess with the keywords. The purpose for a domain name generator to existing is to allow users to play with different keywords.
The main options are Common, Similar, New, Short, Fun, AI, Premium, Extra, SEO, and Mix.
Pros: simple, intuitive site, by default a good variety of names to select from
Cons: automatically redirects you to Bluehost while keeping the main screen open for keyword manipulation, does not allow to specify suffix or prefix keywords
This name generator has a very basic interface with limited options to customize your name. There are only two options you can modify: Sort Results and Search Terms Filter.
There is no option to provide more specific prefixes of suffix parameters e.g. a number of characters or a specific secondary word.
Once you made your selection you will get a popup with two options:
- Register now and create a site with WordPress.com
- Register now with Bluehost
In my opinion, this generator is quite limited as it defaults user choice to only two options. The good thing is it checks if the Twitter name is available. At first glance, it looks like that site is still being developed and we may expect new features soon.
Pros: simple, intuitive site, check Twitter name availability
Cons: defaults user selection to WordPress.com or Bluehost only
It is quite a comprehensive domain searcher and domain maker tool. It has an old-fashioned interface but it does the job.
There are two main parts:
- Domain Search – it simply checks if a domain name is available; it allows multiple options e.g. domain extension, two or three-word combinations, prefix, suffix and few others
- Domain Maker – there are few options to make your domain name by selecting a start or end word, specifying how natural the name must be and providing a number of characters. It also displays synonymous with the given word.
In terms of buying the newly created domain, the default options are GoDaddy, 1 & 1, NameCheap, Register, MyDomain, Dotster, HostMonster, Easy CGI, and Dreamhost.
Pros: good selection of options to create a nice name
Cons: old looking interface, defaulted to few domain/hosting providers
Domain Wheel is a simple domain generator tool where you go and quickly check possible name options. The tool allows you to place your keyword and select your preferred domain extensions. By default, it displays 16 generated domain names. While the tool does not provide any keyword manipulation it offers “sounds like”, “rhymes with” and “random suggestion” options to add a bit of fun and creativity to the domain name creation process.
Once you select your domain name and click the button you are redirected to Bluehost by default where you can buy hosting and domain.
Pros: quick domain generation tool
Cons: no keyword manipulation, does not provide other domain registrars by default
It is a simple, but very useful site with one-page interface.
There is just one main page where you specify three things:
- Keyword – it allows only one word, but you can concatenate your words, e.g. travelfly
- Word suffix type (adjective, verb or noun) and length
- If the generated word (prefix or suffix) will be added to the beginning (prefix) or end (suffix)
The default domain registrar is GoDaddy, but you can simply ignore it and use the site to generate your domain name and later use any domain registrar you want.
Pros: simple with enough options
Cons: only generates com names, defaulted to GoDaddy for domain registration
Again this site has a very simple but modern interface.
You simply type up to five keywords and you will be presented with results. In my test, I typed “like cooking outback Australia” and below are the results. The results are grouped by exact keywords, blends, rhymes, pre/suffixes, and modifications.
I have a feeling that the number of results displayed is not satisfactory, simply there are too few for the four-word keyword I submitted. Also, when you decide to purchase you are redirected to Bluehost by default and you don’t have other options.
Pros: simple, clean interface
Cons: too few results, defaulted to Bluehost, no other domain registrars are displayed
Domain Puzzler is a simple domain generator tool that has three main options:
- Easy – you type words separated by a comma and a result will be a mix of these words
- Advanced – in addition to your main keywords, you also type secondary words that will be mixed together with your main words
- Magic – your main words will be mixed up with some most popular words
In general, it is a very simple site and if you do not look for many options this is the place to go.
Pros: simple, one-page interface, a good variety of domain registrars
Cons: limited keyword manipulation
This tool has a wide variety of tools to create a domain name. The main options are Domain Name Generator, 3 Words Domain Name Generator, Rhyming Domain Name Generator, Random Keyword Domains, Domain Brainstorm. Also, there are other tabs to get even more complex searching for a name. In general, it is a good tool with multiple options.
When I visited the site I was overwhelmed by the number of options available.
Pros: a comprehensive set of tools to create, check, manipulate new domain name
Cons: small fonts, old fashioned interface, too complex for a beginner, only five searches available and you have to buy a subscription
NameBoy owners claim to be the oldest domain name generator in the world. The site has a nice, clean interface where you provide your keywords and get the results on the screen.
Once you press enter you get the annoying redirection to Bluehost while the main screen is still open. You need to close the other window to continue your search.
An additional con is that there is no additional keyword manipulation to select like prefix or suffix. Simply, your domain name is generated based on all possible combinations from your keyword.
Once you select your domain to purchase you only have two options:
- Bluehost – they really push you to buy hosting with Bluehost with a free domain
- Domain – this is a known domain registrar where you can purchase a domain at a discounted price
Pros: simple, clean, intuitive site
Cons: automatically redirects you to Bluehost; when selecting domain there are only two options possible: Bluehost and Domain.com; no additional keyword manipulation
Panabee has a clean, modern interface.
You start by typing your ideas and you are presented with the results. After results are displayed there are no additional options to manipulate your keywords or add pre or suffixes to your domain name. You can only load more results and check manually if you like the name.
This domain generator has a predefined algorithm to show users the results without an option for a user to manipulate the domain keyword.
Pros: simple, clean interface
Cons: lack of keyword manipulation
Best Business Name Generators
What to look for?
Usability: as business name generators are for people who want to quickly establish their brand, a good business name generator, should have a nice, smooth interface with not too many options in terms of string manipulation. As a result, it should present users with multiple free or premium names with pre-designed logos for the business.
Features: I think there are two important things when you want to generate any name:
- Minimum or the average number of manipulation
- Possibility to get the only business name with a logo or a full suite with domain name transfer service
Score: average between Usability and Features
In summary, as a potential business name buyer, a typical purchaser should not spend hours generating a business name. Instead, it should be presented with a nice set of options to select and purchase a business name.
Namelix is a super cool business name generator that offers to create a new business name with or without the option to purchase a domain with the process.
When you type your keywords you will be presented with the below screen where you select the following:
- Brand keywords – in case you want to change or update your keywords
- Name length – short, medium or long
- Name style – brandable names, foreign words, misspellings, rhyming words, multiple words, compound words, real words, person names
- Domain options (click the little world icon on the right) – enable/disable domain name check with your preferred extensions
Once you selected your choices and pressed the “Generate” button you will be presented with all possible options. If you enable domain name check it will only show domains that are available.
You will see there will be many premium domains that are quite expensive and those you can purchase in BrandBucket, the site I already described in this article.
However, the list is very long and definitely, there is something interesting to select. If not, however, you can still change your settings and regenerate the names.
If you decide to use one of the names you have two options:
- Click on the logo and this will redirect you to
- Click the register button and this will take you to NameCheap to register the domain
Pros: cool interface, keyword manipulation options, offers premium domain as well as free domains, domain availability check is an option
Names4Brands offers an extensive name generation package. Whatever you are searching for, you can find and generate on this site. Amongst all generators you can find: domain names, expired domains, short domain names, the 90s dropped names, aged domains, old domains, boat names ideas, random word generators, fancy text and many more.
When searching you can provide your keywords alongside other options like language, a number of characters (for the first word or last word) or you can simply randomize the name. The number of options is really extensive for any idea you are looking for.
Considering this is rather a generation tool, once a newly generated name is displayed on the screen you have to click the button to verify with a domain registrar if this domain name is not taken. This is unlike BrandBucket or BrankRoot where they own the domains and the names are available for instant purchase.
Pros: numerous generators
Cons: manual domain name validation
BrandBucket is a site where you can buy a catchy domain by niche alongside business logo and domain transfer services. Once you purchase the name they will transfer the ownership and the control of the domain to you. Then you can use it as your website address, email, or business card.
The logo you get is in editable PNG format which you will own full copyrights upon the purchase. Also, upon the transfer, you can select your preferred domain registrar from many available.
They can even modify the logo for you to meet your business requirements. All business/domain names are pretty expensive but they have pretty catchy names and styles.
It is a very useful option if you do not want to waste time and you look to quickly establish your business. Also, there is a search by industry filter where you can narrow down your selection very quickly.
Pros: instant search, browse by category, professional logo provided
Cons: expensive, only premium domains available
Brandroot is similar to BrandBucket where you can find a unique business name for purchase. Also, they offer a professionally designed business logo and full domain transfer service.
When you search for a business name remember to find one that can grab the attention of your target audience. The name should be easy to remember and branded to represent the vision of your business.
Brandroot offers more than 22000 domain choices to meet your business requirements. They are pretty costly but if you do not want to waste time this is the option for you.
I have not seen any additional filters that you can specify to limit the number of results which is, in my opinion, a big limitation.
Pros: instant search, professional logo provided
FreshBooks is an interactive business name creator. There are three steps to follow:
- Select your industry from Creatives and Marketing, Legal Services and Business Consulting, Trades and Home Services and Information Technology
- Enter your keyword, press enter and you will be presented with three newly created business names. If you are not happy with them you can click the “Show me more names” button
- Once you selected your preferred name you have to register for free to follow the next steps
While the name generator does not provide many options, FreshBooks offers many more services and a name generator is just a small tool on their website.
Pros: fast name creation
Cons: only three names are created by default, you have to register to follow further steps
Best Username Generators
What to look for?
Usability: it should be a small tool with an average number of options to create a nice username on the spot
Features: There are two types of user generators:
- Random user generators – create a mix between two or more words with optional prefixes and suffixes
- Secure user generators – allows you to have an alphanumeric, meaningless name that is secure and impossible to remember e.g. UdmJuQeURcmxYD. Also, the generator should give you options to include as part of generation like uppercase, lowercase, special characters, numbers or symbols.
Score: average between Usability and Features
Jumpix is an all-in-one generator tool with many useful username generators that includes: username, random username, one word, list of 200, word, social media, and experiments.
My favourite is the Word category. When you type a word, e.g. bell, it will display any bell rhymes, consonants sound like, related to, adjectives linked with, nouns linked with, or words triggered by. Then the next step is to click the username and check its availability across social media accounts. The tool checks more than ten social networks which is a great feature.
This tool is well designed with multiple options to select from.
Pros: many generators available, keyword manipulation available
Nordpass is an online password vault tool that allows you to store and manage your username and password in one centralized online location that you can access from any device even if you are offline.
As part of their service, they offer a username generator that you can use for free.
When you type your keyword you can press advanced options to select: random characters, leetspeak (replaces letters with symbols), keep word at the end.
When you click on the chosen username it will check its availability against Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, and Vimeo.
Pros: fast and simple
Cons: limited options for manipulation
SpinXO is another username generator with many options to choose from. Upon your username creation, you can provide a nickname, what you like, hobbies, important words, numbers, or letters. Also, you can select exact words, rhyming or one-word usernames.
When you click the Spin button, a list of possible usernames will be created. Then you can click on the username which will check its availability against five main social media accounts plus Domain.com domain availability.
Apart from the main username generator the website also has Instagram, YouTube, gamer tags, nicknames, and random names generators.
Pros: available categories upon username generation
Cons: too few options for keyword manipulation
LastPass will generate a meaningless username that is not possible to remember. If you really want to stay secure you can use tools like this. The only difficulty is to remember the dodgy name for later use.
There are three options to generate a username: easy to say, easy to read, all characters. To be honest, all generated usernames are difficult to remember.
Cons: difficult to impossible to remember
I think this is the simplest, hustle-free username generator. You simply provide a keyword and the tool will spit out around 100 possible names. Then, after you click on a username it redirects you to a different site to check against the top 25 social media accounts for username availability.
Indeed, sometimes we do not need any complex, just simple tool that does the job.
Cons: no keyword manipulation
It is a super simple username generator where you only specify two things: your keyword and its length. Then, the list of some easy to remember usernames is created.
A big pity is that there is no option to check if the newly created name is available on social media.
Pros: simple, allows to copy username list
Cons: does not check social media for username availability
Best Random Name Generators
What to look for?
Usability: a fast way of creating different names
Features: a huge database of items with categories and subcategories to pick from
Score: average between Usability and Features
In summary, tools like this could be very inspirational for anyone who is writing a fiction story or novel or creating a game plot and they look for some original names to include in their story.
Random-Name-Generator.com is considered as one of the best tools, which helps easily generate first, last name, address, phone number, e-mail address and etc.
You can choose your preferred country, gender and decide how many records you wish to display.
The good thing about this generator is that it has a huge database of random names that you can use for any creative project like games, fiction, novels, etc. It has 71 countries to choose from so that even increases the number of tasks you can use it for.
Pros: 71 countries to choose from
Fantasy name generators is a website with a huge database of different types of names assigned to many categories. The main, top categories are fantasy names, real names, place names, other names, pop culture, descr. gens and other gens.
Each category, though, has a huge number of subcategories. The one I really like is Fantasy Names with around 150 options to select from e.g. dwarf names, fairy names, elf names, naga names, witch names, wizard names, etc.
Below is a small window screenshot showing subcategories. When you click the button you will get 10 random names.
This is a really good site for selecting names in support of your writing story, novel or games. You do not need to make up all your character names and instead just take them from this website. Fantasy Name is definitely among my best random name generators.
Pros: a huge number of categories and subcategories to choose from
Name generator is an all-in-one name generator tool. It includes 40 different name generators that include: character, band, baby, first, last, middle, nickname, cat, pirate, hero, food, house, business, and many more.
Once you select your generator you have to provide some keyword ideas that are related to your search. For instance, when I selected Pirate Name I had to provide three first names, three colours, three adjectives, and a place. After you press the “Write me some pirate names” button, around twenty names are generated.
This tool could be very useful if you write a story, song, and lyrics with some unique, crazy, or spooky name.
Pros: 40 different name generators
Cons: old interface
The main purpose of the Behind the Name website is to understand the etymology and history of first names with an option to generate a random name from the database. When you open the site you have to scroll down to the button and click the “Random Name” button to see the below screen.
Here, you can select country, gender, surname (optional) as well as three additional options: generate life story, avoid rarely and avoid diminutives. I think the best part of this name generation tool is the “Generate Life Story” option.
This will actually create a short, random story about a particular name. It could be very useful when you create a game or novel synopsis and you want to include some stories to your characters.
Pros: etymology, history, and name statistics
Cons: – old interface
At the moment of writing this article, the Random word generator had 35 different types of generators that include: word, noun, synonym, verb, name, adjective, sentence, phrase, paragraph, and many more.
Pros: 35 different generators
Cons: – N/A
Best Name Generators – Executive Summary
Any tool we look for should have its purpose and once users go and use it, they should be able to complete the task reasonably quickly without being distracted from some pop-ups or redirections to other sites. Most of the generators I listed in the article are like that and they serve their purpose.
I hope this best name generators article helps you select the right tool for any task. In my research, I tried to be as objective as possible and I listed the generators in a score descending order for easy navigation. I would be glad to hear from you, so if you have any feedback please drop a comment below.
